TAMPA – Aaron Judge's way back to full punch training took a small step on Friday when he hit a tee and manager Aaron Boone gave a thumbs up when he was done.
"Everything is moving there as it should," said Aaron Boone, manager of Yankees, about Judge, who has not made any total cuts against pitching since arriving at the camp last week because of right shoulder pain. "It was a good day for him again."
The show season starts on Saturday, but Boone didn't have an appointment Judge would take part in a game.
"We will not be in a hurry to put him in a game because we are on the calendar," said Boone. "But I think he's pretty good to go."
The team bonding activity of the Yankees after their training on Friday was a ping pong tournament in the pavilion on the Steinbrenner field.
"Being away from baseball stuff and trying to build that close," said Boone when asked what his players were getting out of the sessions.
YES. Happ starts the exhibition opener and is followed by Michael King, Luis Cessa and Nick Tropeano. Jonathan Loaisiga, Gerrit Cole, possibly Cessa and Tanaka are the starters beyond Happ.
Miguel Andujar will not play the Rays on Saturday, but Boone said he will travel to Port Charlotte on Sunday and play third base against the Rays. Boone said Andujar would be free on Monday and play first base against the pirates on Tuesday evening.
With Gio Urshela as the first third baseman, Andujar, who finished second at the AL Rookie of the Year race in 2018 as third baseman, works on the third, first and outfield.
"We'll see how he reacts physically," said Boone of Andujar, who had missed most of last season due to surgery on his right shoulder. "Try to get him used to the different places. I think he showed that he will probably be able to do that. Now it is a matter of actually gaining experience. "
During most live strikes, the pitchers, even those who have no chance of forming the squad, handcuffed rackets. Friday turned a little when DJ LeMahieu came home and sent a sizzling line to the center of Masahiro Tanaka.
The New York weather took a stroll south. The last training of the camp with a full squad took place with temperatures in the 50s and a lively wind that cooled the Steinbrenner field.
After Gerrit Cole ended a short-sleeved bullpen session, he had some free time and spent her watching Tanaka throwing BP live. Cole lives on information and was impressed by Tanaka's balance on the hill.
Yankees play the Blue Jays on the Steinbrenner field in the first exhibition game of spring training. YES. Happ starts for the hosts.
