Designing movie costumes is quite difficult without additional stressors.
"I remember sitting at one of our first big production meetings, and someone said Harley Quinn was the number 1 Halloween costume last year," says costume designer "Birds of Prey," Erin Benach. "No pressure."
Harley Quinn, and his 13 scandalous outfits, are at the center of "Birds of Prey," a DC Comics-based movie about a superhero team that hits theaters Friday.
Harley (Margot Robbie) joins the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) to defeat a crime boss (Ewan McGregor) .
But it is the joyously deranged Harley, first introduced to moviegoers in "Suicide Squad" of 2016, who receives the most attention and love cosplay from fans.
Benach, who was also the costume designer for "A Star Is Born," was inspired by the comics, as well as Robbie.
“I would give instructions like,‘ Harley would just walk down the street and put his hand in a [store] window and take out what I would like, "says Benach." That was useful. "
Benach wanted Harley's outfits to have a DIY style, as she imagined the character would make her own clothes.
The crazy cacarera also has a childish side, so Benach thought about what his 7-year-old daughter would like, and included stickers, beads and shiny looks in Harley's closet.
An outfit that you will probably see often this Halloween is a jacket made of streamers and yellow "caution" tape from the police. He was partially inspired by a singer that Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs once used.
"I felt like Harley often at the crime scene and she took the tape and used it for herself," says Benach. "There's something like that‘ I don't give a shit. "
The jacket was originally made with party streamers, but they were replaced with more durable cloth strips.
The other highlight of Harley that is probably chosen by fans is a gold monkey adorned with a diamond pattern.
The costume designer considered four color options, but in a test fight scene, gold appeared more.
One of the challenges that came with any chosen fabric was finding enough.
"There had to be 80 yards, because you have to make 15 copies for the specialists or for all the times we are going to fly [during fight scenes]"Says Benach.
A character with a dimmer closet is Huntress. He mainly sticks to follow costumes until the end of the movie, when he appears in something closer to his comic book costume.
"The Huntress & # 39; color palette is black, silver and purple, and I interpreted it in a street way," says Benach.
Black Canary's outfit also pays homage to his comic roots. The character is known for wearing fishnets on the page, so when we meet the character who dances in a club, he wears a dress made partially of fishnet.
Other times, he often wears a tight suit.
"When I think of being a woman and feeling more secure and rude, I think of a suit," says Benach. "He's taking this idea of a superhero outfit and turning it aside."
Montoya, a detective, looks particularly memorable: a shirt worn in protest that said "Did I shave my balls for this?"
"We wanted to give everyone an iconic moment, and that was theirs," says Benach.
McGregor's character was dressed in clothes and jackets as they could be favored by a narcissistic villain with endless cash. He has a custom logo printed on his scarves, his initials printed on the lining of his jacket and he wears a pajamas printed with McGregor's face in a repeated pattern.
Good luck recreating that this Halloween.
