London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s fiancee Carrie Symonds gave birth to a healthy boy at a London hospital earlier than expected on Wednesday.
Symonds, 32, had previously said that her baby should “hatch” in early summer. It was not clear whether Johnson, 55, would take paternity leave as the government faces the worst health crisis since the 1918 influenza outbreak.
“The Prime Minister and Ms. Symonds are pleased to announce the birth of a healthy boy in a London hospital this morning,” said a spokeswoman. “Both mother and baby are doing very well.” The Prime Minister and Ms. Symonds want to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team. “
There was no announcement of a name. The new arrival is a turbulent month for Johnson. He returned to work on Monday after recovering from COVID-19, which made him critically ill in the intensive care unit at the height of the coronavirus outbreak.
Symonds, a former PR manager, also had symptoms of the virus, but recovered faster.
BABY IN DOWNING STREET
Few UK leaders have had babies in office, although this is more common among the youngest residents of Downing Street.
David Cameron’s wife Samantha gave birth to their daughter Florence in 2010, and Tony Blair’s wife Cherie gave birth to their son Leo in 2006.
Previously, Frances, the wife of John Russell, a Whig and liberal politician of the 19th century, gave birth to two children in 1848 and 1849 while in office.
“It’s good to hear Downing Street is getting a new resident,” said Johnson’s Secretary of the Treasury, Rishi Sunak.
Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labor Party, said, “Wonderful news. Congratulations to Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.”
Symonds and Johnson have lived together on Downing Street since becoming Prime Minister in July. They announced in February that they were expecting their first child and were engaged to be married.
Johnson, once called “Bonking Boris” by the British tabloids, has a complicated private life.
He was once released from the Conservative Party political team when he was in the opposition for lying about an extramarital affair. He has been divorced twice and refuses to say how many children he has had.
In 2013, when Johnson was Mayor of London, the Court of Appeals judges ruled that the public had the right to know that he had an extramarital affair with a woman who gave birth to his daughter.
Johnson’s previous marriage was to Marina Wheeler, a lawyer. They had four children together, but announced in September 2018 that they had split up. You divorced earlier this year.
Symonds announced their engagement to Johnson in February.
“Many of you already know, but for my friends who still don’t, we got engaged at the end of last year … and we have a baby that hatches in early summer,” she said. “Feel incredibly blessed.”
