The G3 15 is the entry point from Dell for its gaming laptops, at least for them Not sold under the company Alienware Division, This is the step-down model from the G5 15who won an Editors' Choice Award from us last year, but don't take that as a knock. Although at the bottom, the G3 and G5 have some overlap of the components. With the G3, you get essentially the same configuration and similar performance for less, even if the design isn't as sophisticated or robust.

To like

  • Good performance for the money
  • Thin and light for a gaming laptop

I do not like it

  • Flimsy compared to Dell G5
  • Display color could be better

At least that's the case with the G3 I tested, which sells for $ 792 in current promotions, while the same component mix in the G5 is currently $ 852. It's not a big savings, but it's something. However, once you go beyond this configuration, the price difference becomes even smaller and the decision more difficult. That's why the G3 is still worth a look.

Less is more

The newer processors from Intel and Nvidia run cooler than their old chips, allowing PC manufacturers to make thinner and lighter gaming laptops. This is the case with the Dell G3 15, which looks more like a mainstream thin-and-light than what was offered at its price a few years ago. The G3 is still 2.5kg and 21.6mm thick, but that's less than the G5 and some others in its class.

Slimmer bezels on the sides of the 15.6-inch Full HD display help reduce the overall footprint of the G3 and give it a modern look. The display is neat and again much better than before at this price, but it's still one of the weaker parts of the package. It's bright when it's plugged in, but loses battery power and the color of the screen isn't impressive. Despite the built-in SD card slot, I would not recommend this display for color-critical work. On the other hand, you can easily connect an external display with a full-size HDMI connector and a USB-C connector.

The keyboard is suitable for both typing and gaming, but the blue markings are difficult to see when the backlight is turned off.

More for less

The G3 I tested ran on a 9th generation Intel Core i5-9300H and the GeForce GTX 1650 from Nvidia. The Intel chip didn't bring much on the table compared to the eighth generation version. While it's nice to have the latest generation CPU, you won't see any significant performance gains. The advantages of the GTX 1650 are somewhat clearer: They achieve better frame rates than the older GTX 1050 Ti, but at about the same price. Laptops with the Nvidia GTX 2060 and better are priced at over $ 1,000.

Basically, the 1650 is unlikely to give you the smooth 60 fps that we expect for demanding games with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, but it's feasible to achieve over 30 fps at this resolution for current games. If you want headroom for future games, I recommend saving for a G5 or another gaming laptop with at least one GTX 1660 Ti or ideally a GeForce RTX 2060.

There isn't a big discount between the G3 and G5, but it is enough if you add more memory or memory (both are easily accessible for you to upgrade) or want to upgrade good gaming mouse, The G3 is also thinner and lighter than the G5, and its design is also a little less "gamer". Even if you are not currently buying, you should pay attention to discounts.
