Dell G7 15

The Dell G7 15 is a victim of the success of its low-end linemate. The G5 15 offers a variety of component options starting at $ 900 for beginners and mainstream gamers, and everything is packaged in an attractive, relatively thin, and lightweight case Editors & # 39; Choice Award to the Budget gaming laptops last year. The G7 15 is the upgraded version with things like a thinner, lighter all-metal body instead of plastic, high-quality component and display options, and a 4-zone keyboard with RGB LED backlight. But all of that is simply not enough to make an enthusiastic recommendation. At least not for the more expensive configuration that I tested.

To like

  • Thin and light for a mainstream gaming laptop
  • Offers high-end components for less than Dell's Alienware brand

I do not like it

  • Small, inconsistent touchpad
  • Features like Thunderbolt 3, 144Hz / 240Hz displays are only available with more expensive graphics

The problem I have is that the G7 is not different enough from the G5 if you are on a budget. And for those who are less limited in price, the Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card in my test system raises the price so that it is not too far from the nicer and more powerful Alienware m15,

Unless you really want RTX card support for Ray tracing or DLSS This improves lighting and detail realism in supported games (there are currently only a few dozen). You'd better buy the G7 with a GTX 1660 Ti chip that works almost as well for less. In other words, if you want to spend on the RTX 2060, you can also spend it on a better laptop like the m15.

That doesn't mean you should stay away from the Dell G7 15. Oddly enough, the Dell G7 15 currently costs $ 900 for what appears to be the same configuration as the base G5 15. In this case, the G7 is definitely the way to go.

The base G7 model costs £ 1,149 in the UK and $ 2,313 in Australia, although both are better than the US.

I also like the look of the G7 and the metal case makes it more valuable than the G5. The keyboard is convenient for typing and playing. Because Dell used white markings instead of the blue markings on the G5, you can easily read the buttons when the backlight is off. The touchpad, on the other hand, is disappointing. It is actually smaller than the G5 and I found it was wiped a few times until it recognized my touch.

The rest of the build is similar to the G5, with display ports, Ethernet, and power on to make it easier to use on a desk with peripherals. In addition to HDMI, my system had a Mini DisplayPort, which is only available if you receive the RTX 2060 card or higher. The same applies to Thunderbolt 3 and display options for refresh rates of 144 Hz or 240 Hz. There is also an Ultra HD resolution (3,140 x 2,160 pixels) OLED if you want to increase the price up to $ 2,400. On the other hand, you can get a similar configuration in the Alienware m15 with an OLED display for $ 2,750.

Basically if you want the performance of an alienware for less money and in a body that doesn't look So much Like a typical aggressive gaming laptop, the Dell G7 15 is also worth considering. Depending on your configuration and budget, you may be better off with the G5 15 or save for the Alienware m15.
