As video conferencing becomes the new normal, Google adds around 3 million new users to its Meets app every day and has seen a 30-fold increase in usage since January. According to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, there are now over 100 million meet-meeting participants every day.
“More than 100 million students and educators use Google Classroom, twice as many as since the beginning of March. The demand for Chromebooks has increased massively. Analysts reported an increase of 400 percent in the week of March 21 compared to the previous year. Schools and companies in particular use our secure video conferencing platform Meet, “said Pichai during the late Tuesday earnings call.
Pichai emphasized that the world will not look the same after the emergency, and that some social norms will change and many companies are trying to reinvent their business. “Ultimately, we will see a long-term acceleration in the transition from business to digital services, including increased online work, education, medicine, shopping and entertainment. These changes will be significant and permanent,” said Pichai.
Users spend significantly more time with their Android apps. Google Play app downloads will increase 30 percent from February to March. “YouTube watch time has also increased significantly. One area in particular is live streams. I hope you saw Andrea Bocelli live on YouTube at Easter, which just had over 39 million views and was really beautiful,” added Pichai.
Android previewed Android 11, which offers seamless 5G connectivity and a smarter keyboard with faster messaging. “And as I mentioned before, we saw significant growth in the game. There are now over 2.5 billion active gaming devices per month worldwide. In hardware, we saw a decrease in device activations in the quarter due to falling global customer demand. But “I’m very excited about the product roadmap for the coming year, including the launch of Pixel Buds 2 yesterday,” Pichai said.
