New Delhi: India needs to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity in various areas, including antibiotics, to reduce its dependence on China, industrialist Sajjan Jindal said on Wednesday.

Almost all of the antibiotic raw material needs are imported from China, which means that it controls the Indian antibiotic market, the chairman of the JSW Group said in a statement.

"India should not become a victim of China's strategy to put the critical sectors of our economy out of action. It is high time that the government strengthened and expanded the manufacturing sector," he said.

In a country like India where the population is large and consumption is high, "we cannot become a slave to Chinese dominance," he said, adding that the country needs a firm policy to protect the manufacturing industry from such predatory tactics protect.

China, Jindal said, uses its production scale to manufacture critical goods and then discards them to other countries at an underselling price, making local industries unprofitable and forcing them to shut down.
