Sporting announced on Wednesday that United would pay the player an entry fee of € 55 million ($ 61 million), although the total cost of the performance-related add-on deal could increase by € 25 million.
Fernandes scored 63 goals and 52 assists in 137 games for Sporting and has been associated with a move to Old Trafford in the past six months.
"We have been following Bruno for many months and everyone here is impressed by all of his attributes and what he will bring to this team," said United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a statement
“The goals and assumptions made by Bruno speak for themselves, he will be a fantastic addition to our team and help us to continue in the second half of the season.
"The winter break is the perfect time for us to integrate Bruno into the team and get to know his teammates."
Fernandes has been capped 19 times by Portugal and was part of the squad that won the Opening League of Nations last year.
He will become United's first addition to the transfer window and will strengthen the midfield if Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are not injured.
"It feels incredible to be playing for Manchester United now. I have worked hard to get this moment and I can promise the fans that I will do everything for the badge to bring us more success and trophies "said Fernandes.
