In New Orleans, an arrest warrant for Odell Beckham Jr. for simple battery was issued after he was reported to have beaten a policeman during the LSU's national title celebration.
The 27-year-old Browns star receiver met a security guard who chastised Tigers players in the Superdome locker room after the LSU's 42:25 victory over Clemson in the national title fight on Monday evening.
“We are aware of the incident and have contacted Odell and his representatives about it. They are working with the relevant authorities to address the situation appropriately, ”said the Browns statement.
A law enforcement agency told NOLA.com that the police have pushed for sexual abuse charges, but a judge declined. The incident was apparently posted on Instagram by Andrew Magee, the offensive LSU lineman, and surfaced on several websites on Wednesday.
It is the second Beckham controversy that emerged after the LSU triumph. Beckham was also recorded when he gave players money while celebrating on the field. After initially claiming it was counterfeit money, the LSU admitted that the money was real.
"We are aware of the situation that Odell Beckham Jr. will contact LSU student athletes and other non-team athletes after Monday night's championship game," a statement said on Wednesday. “According to the first information, the exchanged notes were new. The information and footage checked since the shows may also have been distributed to LSU student athletes.
“We were immediately in touch with the NCAA and the SEC when we heard about this situation, which may have put some of our student athletes in a compromising position. We are working with our athletes, the NCAA and the SEC to improve the situation. "
Beckham played the lead role at the LSU and was designed by the Giants in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Beckham was traded to the Browns that mid-season and became a source of trade speculation in a disappointing 6:10 season that resulted in coach Freddie Kitchens being fired.
