PETA ends sexy ‘I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur’ campaign

Less fur is flying these days among animal rights activists.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has announced that it will discontinue its "I prefer to undress myself than wear skins" campaign, a 30-year effort to fight the fur industry by presenting celebrities, and their strategically placed limbs, in nude photos next to the slogan .

PETA, which targets the alleged abuse of animals in scientific laboratories, clothing production, food industry and entertainment, began the advertising campaign in 1990, but has announced that it is coming to an end, on the cusp of Fashion Week in New York, because they have seen significant changes in the fur industry.

"Almost all the best designers have taken their hair off, California has banned it, Queen Elizabeth II has resigned it, Macy is closing her fur salons," PETA senior vice president Dan Mathews told the Post, who conceived the "Nude" campaign. He also notes that the North American manufacturer North American Fur Auctions filed for bankruptcy last fall.

"With fur in a downward spiral, PETA will expand our efforts to expose the violent exchanges of leather and wool," said Mathews, who recounted his wild days as an activist in his 2007 book "Committed: a memory of Rabble-Rouser," and whose second memory, "Like Crazy: Life With My Mother and Her Invisible Friends", will be published in May.

In the spring of 2019, PETA expressed its support for the proposed ban on the sale of fur in New York City, a bill sponsored by Council President Corey Johnson.
