An unusual pole vault accident turns out to be every man's worst nightmare.

Zach McWhorter, a 21-year-old sports student from Brigham Young University, was almost mutilated during a routine video-recorded practice run. He clears the bar with ease, but the clip takes a terrifying turn when, instead of falling safely to the side, the bar jams at the worst possible angle imaginable: directly below it and impaling its groin area.

McWhorter shared the terrible video on the popular social media platform TikTok.

"This time the rod went through my NS … 18 stitches later … RIP to my future children," it says in the caption. The post has gone viral with more than 18.7 million views and 3.6 million likes.

He also shared a graphic image of his underwear with a gaping hole through which the bar was torn.

"I could look straight into my scrotum," he told Buzzfeed after the accident.

Fortunately for McWhorter, his father is also his trainer and trained urologist.

"Immediately after the incident, we got into his car and drove to the hospital and he sewed me together. 18 stitches were required! McWhorter said.

Shocking, it doesn't sound like there are permanent effects.

“Fortunately, as far as I know, there is nothing wrong with my testicles – just a scar. One day we'll find out if they work or not, ”said McWhorter.

The young athlete says he learned an important lesson from the ordeal.

"Don't play freely (wear shorts without spandex inserts)" and "always put a cap on the end of the bar."
