Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP chief Subramanian Swamy said on Saturday that public sector companies should be given the freedom to make decisions and act in accordance with market dynamics.
India should recognize the strength of the power supplies, said the BJP member as he turned to the 18th edition of the NALCO series of lectures on "The relevance of power supplies to the design of New India".
"The public sector is important to India's development, and these sectors need to be encouraged to prosper. Power supplies should be given the freedom to make decisions and act in accordance with market dynamics," said Swamy.
Swamy also said he was against Air India's divestment. "This is mainly because there are areas where India's private sector cannot live up to its ambitions … There are certain sectors that can only be researched and developed by power supplies," he said.
The public sector should go beyond making profits and focus on multi-dimensional goals, the BJP legislator said, adding that power supplies must be ready to be competitive in terms of commercial principles.
