Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, accused his daughter of "discounting" the British royal family in an interview released a day after Buckingham Palace.
The palace announced on Saturday that the couple would stop using their "Royal Highness" titles and pay for their own lifestyle. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the whole country wished them "the very best" with the new regulation.
"As I said … I was certain that the royal family, which has been around for a very long time, will find a way forward," said Johnson Sky News in Germany, where he attended a summit on Libya.
The monarchy was in turmoil earlier this month when Harry and his former American actress announced that they wanted to reduce their official duties and spend more time in North America.
Saturday's announcement from the palace followed discussions in recent days between Queen Elizabeth, her family, and officials about how this would work in practice for Harry (35) and Meghan (38).
Thomas Markle told Channel 5 News in a documentary that he believed Meghan would throw away "every girl's dream."
"It's disappointing because she actually has every girl's dream. Every young girl wants to be a princess and she has it and now she throws it away because it looks like she's throwing it away for money," he said.
The interview was filmed after the couple announced they would step down as senior members of the royal family. Channel 5 released part of the interview on Sunday, saying the full documentary would air "in the coming weeks".
Thomas Markle described the royal family as "one of the greatest long-lived institutions of all time" and said that when Meghan married Harry in May 2018, they had taken on the obligation to "be part of the kings and represent the kings".
"This is like one of the largest long-lived institutions ever," he said. "They're destroying it, they're making it cheaper, they're making it shabby … they're making it a Walmart with a crown of it. It's a ridiculous thing, they shouldn't be doing that."
Thomas Markle and his daughter have been estranged since their marriage to Harry.
Earlier this month, the Mail on Sunday newspaper filed its response against Meghan for publishing a private letter she had sent to her father.
Thomas Markle said he did not expect Meghan to contact you.
"I can't see her reaching me, especially now … or Harry, but I think both are turning into lost souls at this point," he said.
"I don't know what they're looking for. I don't think they know what they're looking for."
