The Naupada police in Thane arrested a 27-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly harassing his girlfriend to drive her to suicide.

The accused Suraj Shirke and the victim Sonia Rane (21) were neighbors in the Tekdi bungalow in Thane (West). The police said they had been in a relationship for three years.

On Thursday morning, Sonia went to her aunt's apartment, which is in the same area. Her aunt and cousin sister were at home. Since Sonia visited her residence frequently, they were not surprised to see her. Five minutes later, she suddenly ran into the bedroom and locked herself in.

"Sonia's aunt called her neighbors and opened the door. Her parents had also reached by then. She was taken to Jupiter Hospital, where she was pronounced dead before she was admitted," said a Naupada police officer.

Sonia's parents turned to the police and filed a complaint against Mr. Shirke. “Sonia had recently told them that after three years in a relationship when she raised marriage, Mr. Shirke flatly refused. He didn't even give a specific reason for his rejection, which made her suspect that he never intended to marry her at all. Her parents said in their complaint that the problem had become the cause of frequent disputes between the two and that he had attacked them several times, ”said chief police inspector Anil Mangale from the Naupada police station.

Mr. Shirke was picked up from his home and taken to the police station. After a preliminary interview, he was arrested late Thursday evening and charged with suicide under the Indian Penal Code.
