The New Jersey Devils were cooled by a goalkeeper with their own number
Mikko Rantanen scored three goals, Nathan MacKinnon had two assists and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Devils 5-2 on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Ian Cole and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare each had a goal and assist for Colorado. Philipp Grubauer scored 28 parades when he scored his fourth win over the Devils in four attempts.
Blake Coleman and Jesper Boqvist scored in the third half for the Devils, who ended a streak with the top three games of the season. Mackenzie Blackwood scored 29 saves.
The hat trick was Rantanen's second. He had one against Montreal on February 7, 2017.
After a goalless first period, the Avalanche scored a second period with two goals and one goal in the first seconds of the third.
Rantanen, who has scored 10 goals in 17 games since returning from a more than one-month injury, started the game at 11:23 in the second third. MacKinnon made the game, made a turn and found the Finn for a shot from the right point.
Cole doubled the lead by 4:26 minutes and shot shortly after Bellemare's victory.
Rantanen scored his second goal in 8 seconds when he was brought in front by rookie defender Cale Makar. The third was placed in an empty network with a playing time of 16 seconds.
Coleman made it 3-1 at 6:36, but Bellemare scored a controversial goal at 13:49. Matt Calvert accidentally stumbled Blackwood behind the cage and Bellemare ripped a shot into an open net. The devils challenged, but the judgment on the ice was not changed.
The Avs had a goal in the first half when Joonas Donskoi used a high stick to blow a ricochet past Blackwood.
