South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, fiddling with a face mask, is making social media gasp. Fortunately for the citizens of his country, the president also had a sense of humor about the whole incident.
When Mr President spoke to his nation about coronavirus restrictions and loosening the block on Thursday, he clumsily pulled out a colorful face mask and tried to wear it.
The fabric mask became an eye mask on Ramaphosa, a scene that reminded many of Sandra Bullock Birdbox.
The funny but completely avoidable incident triggered several hashtags on Twitter. #CyrilMaskChallenge, #facemaskchallenge, #Ramaphosa and many more saw Twitterati take off their masks and imitate the President. Some just joined the party with funny memes.
The following day, Friday, Ramaphosa addressed the elephant in the room by making fun of himself, which was widely appreciated by his country. “For those who laughed at me yesterday, I want to tell you something,” Ramaphosa told reporters. “I’m going to open a TV channel where I teach people how to put on a mask. They can sign up …” he chuckled. The video was later widely distributed on social media.
