Without me they push it forward: Hugo Weaving on Matrix 4
Hugo Weaving, who was part of the Matrix franchise for the first three films, will not be part of the fourth film due to a scheduling conflict with his upcoming film The Visit.

Actor Hugo Weaving was in conversation to repeat his role as Agent Smith in the upcoming fourth installment of the Matrix series, but things didn't happen after director Lana Wachowski decided to continue the film without him.

The 59-year-old actor was given the opportunity to participate in the new film, but the schedule clashed with his lead role in The Visit's theater production.

"It is unfortunate, but actually I had this offer (for The Visit) and then the offer came from The Matrix, so I knew it was happening, but I had no appointments. I thought I could do both and it took eight weeks to work towards making the data work – I was reluctant to take on a role in The Visit during this time.

"I was in touch with Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the data wouldn't work. So we sorted the data and then she changed her mind. They get on without me," Weben told Time Out Magazine.

Matrix 4, supported by Warner Bros, is scheduled for release on May 21, 2021. In the film, franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will repeat their roles as Neo and Trinity. Jada Pinkett Smith will also return as Niobe.

Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell wrote the script together with Lana, who is also said to produce with Grant Hill. Aquaman stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris are also part of the cast.
