Motorola, a company best known for its budget and mid-range phones, took a giant step into the premium phone market on Wednesday, launching Motorola Edge and Edge Plus. Both phones connect to it Motorola Razr as a high-end offering from the Chicago-based company. While the Razr has been criticized for its cutting-edge technology, Edge and Edge Plus are brimming with the latest specs that can keep up with Samsung, OnePlus and Apple. It’s like Motorola went to the grocery store and emptied the shelves.

The Motorola Edge Plus for $ 1,000 is the same price as that Samsung Galaxy S20, the same screen size as the Galaxy S20 Plus and the same 5,000 mAh battery and the same 108 megapixel camera as that Galaxy S20 Ultra. (The Edge Plus is not currently available in the UK and Australia. In these countries, the Galaxy S20 costs from £ 799 and AU $ 1,349. The Edge costs £ 549 in the UK.)

The Edge is intended to be a somewhat reduced and less expensive option. Motorola has not yet announced the price, but the cheaper phone will hit the market sometime this summer. Motorola takes a similar approach to both phones as OnePlus with its 8 and 8 Pro ($ 999 at OnePlus), even though both Edge phones use the same screen size.

The Motorola Edge Plus has 5G

We launched many 5G phones this year, and the Edge was designed to work with 5G from the start. The Motorola Edge Plus supports both sub-6 and millimeter waves with up to 5 gigabits per second. Motorola claims that its optimizations will result in the “fastest 5G ever”. We have to test these claims.

The Motorola Edge Plus was developed from the ground up as a 5G phone.

The Edge Plus has a 108 megapixel rear view camera

The Motorola Edge Plus has three rear cameras. The main camera has a 108 megapixel sensor that combines groups of four pixels to create a 27 megapixel image. According to Motorola, the sensor is almost three times the size of the 12 megapixel sensors used in other phones, which could help improve brightness and reduce image noise.

I look forward to trying the Edge Plus camera system in more detail. But the few photos I took looked good on the Edge Plus screen.

The Edge Plus can record 6K videos with 20 megapixel photos while recording. Although the Edge Plus has a Snapdragon 865 processor that enables 8K shooting, Motorola believed that 6K is better paired with the main camera sensor.

There are three rear view cameras: a main wide angle camera, a telephoto and an ultra wide angle camera.

There’s also a video portrait mode, a special long exposure mode with a shutter speed of up to 32 seconds and night vision, in which eight photos are stacked and combined into a single shot that is brighter, sharper and more detailed.

There is a 25 megapixel selfie camera on the front of the hole punch display.

The Motorola Edge Plus has a 90 Hz waterfall display

The name Edge refers to the 6.7-inch “endless edge” display that wraps around the sides of the phone. It is not the first phone with a waterfall display, but it is absolutely breathtaking personally. The edge can glow in different colors to indicate battery charging, alarms and notifications. There’s also a neat widget that you can access for shortcuts. Motorola built-in handle and touch suppression to minimize accidental touches on the screen.

The display wraps around the edges and has a small hole through which the 25 megapixel front camera can pierce.

If the edges are too large, you can select in the settings which apps use the edges and which do not. When the edges are off, they turn black and the screen looks like a normal normal display. During my time on the phone, I didn’t see an “all or nothing” switch for turning the edge on and off.

The edges are used well in the new Moto Gametime mode. You can set them up as shoulder buttons or reposition your on-screen buttons so they are better suited for gameplay.

I’m not sure how helpful the Edge screen will be in everyday use. It is obviously reminiscent of Samsung Galaxy phones and their edge displays. But gaming functionality is pushing it towards gaming phones like that Asus ROG phone 2 and Black Shark 2 Pro but without the glowing logo.

Speaking of gaming phones: The Edge’s 21: 9 screen has a variable refresh rate of 90 Hz, which makes animations look smoother, text and images become razor-sharp, and gaming (especially games with a high frame rate) becomes even more intense. You can also overwrite the variable setting and set it to 60 Hz or 90 Hz.

The 90 Hz display is impressive and automatically adjusts the refresh rate depending on what content is shown on the screen.

Motorola Edge Plus vs. Motorola Edge

In many ways, the Motorola Edge is basically the same phone with the same display as the Edge Plus, but with a slimmer case. It supports Sub-6 5G, but not the faster millimeter wave aroma of 5G. Instead of a Snapdragon 865 in the Edge Plus, it has a Snapdragon 765 processor. Instead of a 5,000 mAh battery, it has a 4,500 mAh battery. Instead of a 108 megapixel main camera, it has a 64 megapixel main camera.

The biggest difference is the price. We don’t yet know exactly what that will be, but we have to guess that if the Motorola Edge Plus costs $ 999, the Motorola Edge will be cheaper when it gets released sometime this summer.

The Motorola Edge is a slightly smaller and cheaper version of the Edge Plus.

I should also note that the Edge Plus is exclusive to Verizon in the U.S., but the Edge is sold unlocked. We look forward to testing both phones for a review.
