After Vivo Y17 (Review) and Vivo Z1 Pro (Review) have been started in quick succession, Vivo attacks the Sub-R. The 20,000 segment continues with the new Vivo S1. The Vivo S1 is physically similar to its siblings, but changes the internal hardware and headlining functions to appeal to a slightly higher audience. As things change as quickly as on our market, the Vivo S1 competes with a whole range of devices at similar prices, including the Samsung Galaxy M40 (test) and the Galaxy A50 (test). the Realme 3 Pro (review) and the new Realme X (review); and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) and the new Redmi K20 (review).
The Vivo S1 costs from Rs. 17,990 for the variant with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, but the option is fixed at Rs. 18.990 is not a clear upgrade. You get 6 GB of RAM, but only 64 GB of storage. So buyers should be careful about what they choose. If you want the best of both worlds, the top-end version with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage costs Rs. 19,990.
Visually, the Vivo S1 will polarize. Vivo has fully embraced the trend of color shift patterns that capture the light when you move the device in your hands. The Skyline Blue and Diamond Black color options feature light blue-pink swirls and dark purple diamonds, and there's no simple, sober alternative. Our Diamond Black unit had a gold border around the rear camera module and a gold Vivo logo on the back.
The back of the Vivo S1 is completely flat, but the seams between the rim and the back wall are a bit rough. In terms of key assignment, connections and even the shape and positioning of the camera module on the back, the Vivo S1 is very similar to the Z1 Pro and thus also to the Y17.
You will find that there is no fingerprint sensor on the back because this phone has a built-in sensor. Other selling points are the three rear cameras, the 32 megapixel selfie camera and the 18 W fast charge.
You get a 6.38-inch full HD + 19.5: 9 AMOLED screen with rounded corners and a water drop notch on the top. We found the display quality to be reasonable, if not particularly vivid. In our in-depth Vivo S1 test, you can learn more about it, including how the built-in fingerprint sensor works.
The MediaTek Helio P65 processor of the Vivo S1 is not the strongest in this price range, but should be sufficient for most casual games. It will be interesting to see how this phone holds up against the Vivo Z1 Pro with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 712. With 4500 mAh, the battery of the Vivo S1 is also smaller than that of its brother, which makes the Vivo S1 considerably slimmer and lighter. and therefore easier to use.
Vivo has equipped the S1 with three rear view cameras – a 16 megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX499 sensor and an aperture of 1: 1.78, a secondary ultra wide-angle camera with a field of view of 120 degrees and an aperture of 1: 2.2 and a 2 megapixel depth sensor. According to Vivo, this phone offers HDR, AI portrait, AR stickers, and slow-motion video.
The 32-megapixel front camera of the Vivo S1 has an aperture of 1: 2.0. There are some AI-enabled tricks in the camera app, such as: B. the beautification of the AI face and selfie lighting. You will receive detailed information about the photo quality of the Vivo S1 in different situations shortly.
We had mixed feelings about Vivo's Funtouch OS skin when we reviewed the company's latest models, and things are no different now. Funtouch OS 9, which runs on Android 9 Pie, has very deep customization UI quirks. Some of them are helpful, others take time to get used to. Our demo unit was updated to the May 2019 Android security update, and we would have liked something newer.
Vivo obviously develops several products at similar prices to appeal to different groups of buyers. The new Vivo S1 does not appeal to performance-hungry enthusiasts like the Z1 Pro, but offers a distinctive style and promises great front and rear cameras. More importantly, it will be available both online and offline.
