Do yoursif you are on the phone or watching TV and do not say “Alexa”? why is it when nobody said the wake-up word? The problem is probably not you It is the case that similar sounding wake-up words trigger your echo loudspeaker like “Lexus” again and again. It might be time to give Alexa a new name.
We tested the options against each other to determine which one inadvertently activated the echo the least. It is not Alexa.
Why not Alexa?
When I go to the Alexa appThere are always several entries from me that have conversations with colleagues (before) Days of course). I did not use the wake-up word in these recordings. The echo probably heard something that sounded like “Alexa”. For example, an employee in a recording said “last time …” what the echo might have thought to be “Alexa”.
My list of recordings is also full of commercials that play in the background because someone said the magic word on TV. Words that can trigger your Amazon Echo ($ 60 at Amazon) If you’ve set “Alexa” as the wake-up word, it includes Lexus, Alexis, Elixir, and Lexa.
Other Amazon Echo Wake words you can use
Although Alexa is automatically set as the wake-up word when you unpack your device, there are other ways to name your smart speaker. For example, you can change the name of the device to computer, Amazon or echo. Of course, you want to choose the one you rarely say in the conversation.
For example, if you keep talking about how slow your computer is running, you probably don’t want “computer”. In addition, words like “consumer” and “commuter” trigger your smart speaker when you do.
If you’re an Amazon shopaholic who always says, “Let me see if I can find it on Amazon,” you shouldn’t call your device that. Words like “Amazonian” and “Parmesan” can activate your speaker even if the wake-up word is Amazon.
I have an Ecobee thermostat, and changing my wake-up word to Echo caused all kinds of chaos. Every time I said “Ecobee” my smart speaker was activated. Other words that can trigger your device when you use this wake-up word are “gecko”, “metro”, “expecto patronum” (yes, from Harry Potter) and the expression “fact of” and in “fact of the matter”.
If you don’t know which wake-up word you least accidentally trigger, try each day for a few days. After testing them, check the Alexa app’s privacy settings to determine which word triggered your speaker the most without deliberately activating it. This is the wake-up word you want to use.
To change the wake-up word, simply say “Alexa, change the wake-up word” and make your selection.
The best Amazon Echo wake-up word of them all
When I tested all of these wake-up words, the rarest “computer” was triggered, with “Amazon” being just under a second. Using “Echo” as a wake-up word turned out to be roughly equivalent to using “Alexa”, so both are off for me.
I’m looking forward to the day Amazon comes up with our own unique wake-up words. I know my tips: Knight Rider, Wall-E or maybe even Minion.
