The good news is that fashion designers and clothing companies are up to the occasion and making masks for general use. The bad news is that they are in such demand that it can take a few weeks for them to arrive at your doorstep if you order them now. Below is a list of the most popular options.
The CDC continues to urge the general public not to wear surgical masks or N95 respirators that are in short supply to keep for health workers. But there is a basic fabric face coveringlike grocery stores and pharmacies where it’s hard not to get in close contact with others.
According to the CDC, the virus is mainly transmitted from person to person via breath droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks in close proximity to others. The agency offers instructions for making masks from household materials such as T-shirts, bandanas and coffee filters, even for people without sewing skills.
Currently, disposable face masks are not immediately available on the websites of many major retailers, including Amazon.com, where a pack of 50 disposable face covers won’t be delivered until June. Disposable face masks with ear loops are also sold out at cvs.com.
Where can you find a mask and how quickly can you get one? Here are some companies that make masks and sell them to the public.
The linen bag manufacturer, Apolis, known for its chic, sustainable market bags, sells customizable cotton face masks for $ 19 each. Mask channels in Mexico receive certified fair wages, and purchases benefit the nonprofit Baby2Baby, a national network that provides essential goods to children living in poverty. Masks are shipped within 14 days and can be returned for 30 days.
Birdwell, a California surfwear brand, evolved from making board shorts to masks last week. It sells reusable masks made from a stretchy swimwear material for general use and donates masks to front workers through actor Sean Penn’s nonprofit CORE. Each mask costs $ 19.95 and will be delivered in one to two weeks.
The classic men’s fashion manufacturer Buck Mason sells a pack of 5 non-medical, reusable cotton face masks with antimicrobial properties. While the design is not a substitute for medical grade medical protective equipment, the company donates 100,000 washable masks to key employees in California. Masks purchased through the website will be shipped in the week of May 4th, according to the company.
“The transition from the manufacturing point of view was pretty seamless since we sew single-stitch cotton, a technique that is very common in apparel production,” Sasha Koehn, co-founder of Buck Mason, told CBS MoneyWatch.
Making masks has also helped the manufacturer keep its workforce busy, even though many fashion brands have retired, Koehn said.
Online manufacturer of custom t-shirts, Custom Ink, has recently started selling fabric masks made of a soft jersey fabric to the general public outside the home. The online retailer sells 12-part “family packs” for $ 30 each and 120-unit packs for $ 240. The masks are black and are machine-cut from a piece of fabric. They are expected to ship on April 16.
The online marketplace Etsy, which offers home-made goods to thousands of sellers, has announced that the demand for fabric covers has increased since the CDC’s recommendation. It has sold hundreds of thousands of masks, with more than 10,000 sellers making mask sales in the past week, CEO Josh Silverman recently wrote in a blog post.
